What is a beginner's class expectation?
Beginning a martial arts program can be daunting, but there's nothing to worry about! A beginner's class typically includes an introduction to the basics of the chosen martial art, including basic strikes, blocks, and stances. The focus is on developing fundamental skills that serve as a foundation for future training.

Is Martial Arts Dangerous?
Although any sport or activity has some risk involved, our team of certified instructors follow safety protocols to ensure a safe and supportive environment for our students. In fact, unlike sports which has one adult supervising an entire team, we have multiple instructors monitoring a room at all times making sure everything runs smoothly. We understand that each student has their own unique limits and we encourage rest and feedback during exercise.

Are These Classes Violent?
Martial Arts is often depicted as a violent activity but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The mindset behind martial arts involves harmony, peace, tranquility, and connection to the body. The majority of training circles around movement and energy. We teach kids how to talk through conflicts and seek the guidance of an adult with the authority to help. However, if an unavoidable violent situation arises in your child’s life, they now have the tools to fend off the attack and safely escape the situation.

Injury Prevention, Dress Code, & Equipment
In martial arts, injuries are always a possibility, but there are many ways to prevent them. It's essential to stretch before and after class and to consult with an instructor on proper technique. Dress codes vary depending on the martial arts program, but traditional martial arts programs often require a uniform. Equipment requirements also depend on the program, but basic equipment such as hand wraps and gloves is commonly used and provided for you.

What are the instructor's qualifications and experience?
Bobby Ryan brings over 16 years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu experience to Element Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He received his Black Belt in BJJ in 2022 from Master Carlos Machado.

What is the average class size?
Kids classes typically have 10-18 students and adult classes are normally 5-10 students.

Training Duration, Frequency, & Goal-Getting
Training duration, frequency, and goals depend on personal preferences and abilities but consistency is key for progress. It's essential to set realistic goals that align with your abilities and track progress. It's important to trust the process and continue to train consistently, remembering that progress can be slow but is attainable. Every class is usually 45 minutes but can go to 60 minutes.

What if my child or myself don’t like the classes?
With any new activity, it’s common to face some resistance in the beginning. We make great efforts to keep classes fun and lighthearted but at the end of the day it’s also an educational experience. We encourage parents to give us a few sessions to get through to new students.

Does my child need to be athletic to benefit from martial arts?
Our classes are tailored towards accommodating students regardless of their weight, age, abilities, or energy levels. Astonishingly, many of our students have tried sports and other athletic activities only to realize it’s not for them. Martial arts is often a sanctuary in these cases as competition is eliminated and each student only attempts what they feel comfortable doing.

How can martial arts prepare my child for life?
Other than training children in conflict resolution and self defense, martial arts also instills essential life skills like discipline, honor, confidence, and respect. The process of goal setting and working towards moving forward is extremely rewarding and causes a major shift in maturity.

Are these classes just for boys or can my daughter do it?
There are a lot of girls in many of our classes as there are boys. Girls love martial arts just as much, and get the same fulfillment out of it as boys do. Also, girls are just as tough as boys in our classes. Some are even tougher! So you don't have to worry about your little girl getting hurt, or feeling scared because she'll be practicing with boys. In fact, the boys may even be the ones who are scared.
